The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MA), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on law enforcement authorities to investigate reported anti-Muslim vandalism in Mashpee, Massachusetts, as a possible hate crime.
The Mashpee Police Department said a retaining wall was spray-painted with “Muslims not welcome” and a large stone was spray-painted with “[expletive deleted] off Muslims.”
In a statement, CAIR-MA Executive Director Tahirah Amatul-Wadud said:
“We thank law enforcement authorities for the swift investigation of these apparently bias-motivated incidents and urge that they be treated as possible hate crimes. As we have witnessed nationwide, hate-filled rhetoric can often result in acts of violence.”
Earlier this year, CAIR released new civil rights data showing that it has received 3,578 complaints during the last three months of 2023 amid an ongoing wave of anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian hate.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
