CAIR-Massachusetts Releases 2024-Mid-Year Civil Rights Report Amid Rising Islamophobia

The Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MA) today released a mid-year civil rights report titled “Islamophobia in Massachusetts: Rising Concerns and Needed State Initiatives.”

According to the report: “Twice as many people called CAIR-MA for help in 2023 as in 2022, an all-time high.”

CAIR-MA is urging state officials and community leaders to take immediate action to address these issues and protect the rights of all Massachusetts residents regardless of their faith. To read the full reportclick here

This report marks the first time CAIR-MA has published a mid-year report, prompted by an unprecedented increase in Islamophobic incidents and hate crimes across the state.

Since October 2023, there has been a significant surge in Islamophobic incidents, including hate crimes, harassment, and discriminatory practices affecting Muslim residents in Massachusetts.

[NOTE: In July, CAIR’s national office said the surge in anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian hate that erupted last October continued in the first half of the 2024.]

This report details several egregious cases, such as a Muslim student being poisoned by a classmate and another being assaulted, leading to a concussion. The report also shares the disturbing story of a Muslim customer who was chased by a coffee shop employee brandishing scissors, further underscoring the escalating nature of these incidents.

CAIR-MA’s Executive Director Tahirah Amatul-Wadud emphasized the gravity of the situation:

“The alarming rise in Islamophobic incidents in Massachusetts is a call to action for all of us. The mid-year report was necessary to bring immediate attention to the ongoing and severe threats facing the Muslim community. These incidents are not isolated; they are part of a broader trend of increasing hostility and discrimination that must be addressed urgently.”

The report highlights the troubling increase in hate crimes and harassment, noting a 40% rise in reported incidents in 2023, continuing an upward trend from 2022. The level of violence has escalated, with incidents involving physical assaults, stalking, threats, and vandalism reaching new highs.

The onset of the war on Gaza in October 2023 is a catalyst for many of these incidents, with nearly twice as many calls for help received by CAIR-MA in the first six months of 2024 compared to previous years. Need for help was also driven by backlash and retaliation against Americans exercising their right to protest foreign government amidst the rise of demonstrations on college campuses in Spring of 2024.

The report also includes policy recommendations, such as implementing comprehensive training for educators on anti-discrimination practices and fostering community engagement to combat prejudice.

In response to these troubling statistics and recommendations, CAIR-MA’s Deputy Director Vincent Ware, previewed new initiatives to come:

“In light of the disturbing trends highlighted in our report, CAIR-MA will be increasing outreach and education initiatives this fall. These initiatives aim to educate our community about their rights, provide support to those affected by discrimination, and foster greater awareness and understanding. Our goal is to empower individuals and ensure that all residents of Massachusetts are treated with dignity and respect.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations – Massachusetts (CAIR-MA) is a chapter of America’s largest Muslim civil rights organization. CAIR-MA’s mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote social justice and mutual understanding.
