CAIR-MI Action Alert: Urge Troy City Council to NOT Appeal the Federal Court Decision Clearing Way for First-Ever Mosque in Troy, MI

(CANTON, MI, 4/6/2022) – Join the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) in protecting Muslims in Troy, Mich., who are at risk of losing their only chance at obtaining a place of worship within the city.

In mid-March, U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds ruled that Troy used its zoning ordinance to keep Adam Community Center from using the site by demanding an overly strict interpretation of the zoning rules.

Take Action: Urge Troy City Council to NOT Appeal the Federal Court Decision Clearing Way for First-Ever Mosque in Troy, MI

For more than three years, Adam Community Center has been fighting a legal battle with the Troy Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA) over what could be the first mosque in Troy.

We have been informed that at least one member of the Troy ZBA has been working with individuals who have as their stated goal to keep Muslims from establishing places of worship in the United States.

In email exchanges, this individual is thanked for doing his part in making sure there are no Muslim establishments within the city of Troy.

Background:

In 2018, CAIR-MI filed a lawsuit against the city of Troy alleging discrimination and violation of Adam Community Center’s rights under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, as well as the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Person’s Act (RLUIPA), when the city of Troy Zoning Board of Appeals failed to grant a variance that would allow them to establish a Mosque inside of an existing commercial building. At the time of the variance request, Adam Community Center’s site plan made no changes to the existing building nor to the existing parking lot.

A year later in 2019, the U.S. Department of Justice filed its companion case against the City of Troy alleging the city’s zoning ordinances violated RLUIPA by treating religious assembly places, and Adam Community Center in particular, on different terms than it did other places of assembly.
