CAIR-MI ‘Deeply Saddened’ by Firebombing of Dearborn Mosque, Suspect Killed by Police

(CANTON, MI, 2/13/2022) – The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed its deep sadness over the firebombing by an armed assailant of a mosque in Dearborn, which led to the suspect being killed by police.

Early yesterday morning, an armed assailant firebombed the Al-Huda Islamic Association in Dearborn.  Dearborn police, who were close to the scene when the fire broke out saw the suspect. Gunfire was reportedly exchanged, leaving the suspect mortally wounded.

As a result of the attack, one entrance of the mosque was destroyed, and one section of the prayer sanctuary suffered water damage.  The assailant was purportedly to be of Arab-American descent, and it is believed that he may have been suffering a mental health crisis that led to his actions.

“We are deeply saddened to hear about yesterday morning’s attack against one of our mosques, in which many of us – including myself – worship,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.  “We commend the swift response of the Dearborn police in responding to what could have resulted in more damage to the mosque and potential violence in the vicinity of a house of worship.”

Walid also thanked Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud for going to the scene of the incident.
