CAIR-MN Calls for Probe of Possible Bias Motive for Robbery, Vandalism of Minneapolis Mosque

(MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 11/29/2022) – The Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) today called on law enforcement authorities to investigate a possible bias motive for a break-in and robbery at Karmel Mall Mosque in Minneapolis, Minn.

On early hours of Thursday Nov. 24, security cameras of the mosque captured what appeared to be a white male suspect entering and breaking into the mosque office. The suspect reportedly damaged a door and took a computer, donation equipment and cash. The total loss is estimated at $10,000. The suspect chose to only burglarize and vandalize the mosque and not touch any of the mall stores.

In a statement, CAIR-MN Executive Director Jaylani Hussein said:

“In places of worship, communities should feel safe and secure, and law enforcement authorities must take threats seriously and address them appropriately. While it’s too early to determine the motive, this attacker chose the mosque over business in his effort to target, burglarize and damage.”

He said mosque officials have started a fundraising campaign to help raise funds to cover the loss and to help increase security at the Mosque.

Hussein added, this incident is the seventh targeting a mosque in Minnesota in recent months. This is the highest total in the history of the state or nation for one state.
