CAIR-NY Executive Director Calls on Biden to Uphold Promise to Rescind Muslim Ban on Day One of Administration

(NEW YORK, NY, 1/8/2021) – The New York chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on President-elect Biden and his administration to prioritize the repeal of the discriminatory immigration policies known as the Muslim and African Bans.

In an online press conference hosted by the New York Immigration Coalition, immigrant advocates demanded the swift end of unjust immigration policies targeting Muslims and immigrants of color.

CAIR-NY emphasized the many inhumane consequences the Muslim and African Bans have had on American Muslims, including family separation, financial difficulties and the denial of life-saving medical treatment. CAIR-NY also said it stands in solidarity with coalition partners to reform DACA, defund ICE, support TPS, and other necessary measures to begin to repair the suffering of immigrant communities.

Afaf Nasher, executive director of CAIR-NY, said:

“From the Muslim and African Ban, to CVE, Quiet Skies, and the Visa Waiver Program, the assault on the Muslim community has been profoundly inhumane, immoral and unjust.

“Americans from all walks of life are demanding change to discriminatory immigration policies, and this requires that President-elect Biden repeal the Muslim and African Ban on ‘day one’ as he promised. The age of accountability is upon us, and it is time to end the systemic racism, xenophobia and Islamophobia in our immigration policies.”

CAIR has published a list of top tier reform recommendations for the Biden-Harris Administration, which outlines changes needed in immigration, national security overreach, racism in policing, and other areas in which civil rights protections are needed.
