CAIR-NY previously welcomed hate crime charges against the off-duty NYPD officer following an incident in which he reportedly hurled anti-Muslim and racist slurs at a driver after being involved in a traffic incident. After yelling “terrorist,” “al Qaeda,” “Mohammed,” “ISIS,” and “F**k your God,” among other offensive things, the officer reportedly assaulted the driver until he lost consciousness.

In a statement, CAIR-NY Executive Director Afaf Nasher said:
“We welcome this firing as an indication that the NYPD will not tolerate officers who hold bigoted views within it ranks and that appropriate action will be taken when evidence of bias surfaces.”
She noted that CAIR-NY called for hate crime charges after the incident occurred.
