The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today released a directory of Maryland elected officials at local, state and federal levels of the government who have publicly supported and called for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The civil rights organization is encouraging the Maryland Muslim community to invite those elected officials who have called for a ceasefire and honor them for their principled position on the issue.
In a statement, CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry said:
“These elected leaders have helped restore some measure of faith in government by demonstrating what it means to lead with compassion, empathy and moral courage in these dark times. Many have faced backlash, political consequences, hate and even threats for speaking up to protect innocent lives in Gaza, yet, despite the pressure, they remained undeterred. We recognize and appreciate them for standing on the right side of history. It should never be controversial to speak up against the indiscriminate targeting of any civilian population. Constituents are paying attention to where our elected officials stand on this issue. These leaders join the nearly 70 percent of Americans who are demanding a ceasefire in Gaza.”
She noted that yesterday, CAIR said that a new Gallup poll revealing that a majority of Americans disapprove of Israel’s military actions in Gaza represents the latest “wake-up call” for President Biden to call for an immediate ceasefire and hold Israeli officials to account for crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Research from the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, a think tank with offices in Washington, D.C. and Dearborn, MI, shows that the overwhelming majority of Muslims, and Jewish Democrats favor a ceasefire.
