CAIR: S. Calif. Muslims Hold ‘Know Your Rights’ Workshop

(ANAHEIM, CA, 4/3/09) – On March 29, the Islamic Institute of Orange County hosted a workshop titled “Know Your Rights: A Workshop for the Muslim Community.” The event was co-sponsored by the Council on American-Islamic Relations – Greater Los Angeles Area (CAIR-LA), the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, MSA West, Muslim American Society – Los Angeles, and the Muslim Public Affairs Council.
The workshop featured civil rights activists and attorneys who spoke about the experiences of earlier communities in standing up for their civil liberties and the importance of holding all government agencies, accountable to the U.S. Constitution. The program was divided into a historical narrative of the struggle for civil liberties in America and a “Know Your Rights” workshop.
Speakers on the panel were: James Lafferty, executive director of the National Lawyers Guild – Los Angeles; Hussam Ayloush, executive director of CAIR-LA; Shakeel Syed, executive director of the Shura Council; Dr. E.M. Abdulmumin, clinical psychologist and founder of the Du Bois Institute in Riverside; Li’i Furumoto, with Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California; Ameena Qazi, staff attorney with CAIR-LA; and Reem Salahi, Bridge Fellow with American Civil Liberties Union – Los Angeles. Arif Shaikh, a volunteer with Islamic Institute, moderated the program.
CAIR-LA’s Qazi conducted the “Know Your Rights” portion of the program along with the ACLU’s Salahi.
The workshop was inspired by recent news of an agent provocateur recruited by the FBI to infiltrate several mosques in Southern California. Additionally, over the past several weeks, community members have reported alleged harassment and intimidation by FBI agents.
CAIR, America’s largest Islamic civil liberties and advocacy group has 35 offices and chapters nationwide and in Canada. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.
