CAIR-San Diego: More than 100 Turn Out for Lecture

(SAN DIEGO, CA, 5/15/06) – More than 100 people turned out on Friday for a CAIR-San Diego lecture on “Correcting Misperceptions About Islam” at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

Presentations were offered by CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush and CAIR-San Diego Director of Public Relations Edgar Hopida. The event also featured a short video of some CAIR’s activities and projects in challenging misperceptions about Islam. Shaykh Taha Hassane, Imam of the Islamic Center of San Diego, served as moderator for the event.

“We as a community need to be more proactive and serve as a source of information about Islam for the public, media and elected officials,” says Hopida.

Omar Hassaine, president of the CAIR-San Diego Executive Committee was also honored by the City of San Diego with an award for Excellence and Community Service. The San Diego City Council proclaimed May 12th to be Omar Hassaine Day because of his contributions to the Muslim Community and the City of San Diego.
