Muslim civil rights and advocacy group says Biden administration must force Israeli government to immediately end genocide
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called President Biden’s “long overdue” expression of support for an immediate and indefinite ceasefire in Gaza a “positive step” that the White House must force the Israeli government to accept.
During a speech today, President Biden said it is “time for the suffering to stop” in Gaza and claimed that the Israeli government had agreed to a proposed three-stage deal that would indefinitely end the far-right Israeli government’s war in Gaza, which CAIR, human rights groups and a growing number of countries consider a genocide.
Israel has slaughtered more than 36,000 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly women and children, with more than 81,000 others injured. Israel has forcibly displaced more than two million Palestinians.
In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“If President Biden is telling the truth when he claims that there is a proposal on the table for an indefinite ceasefire that would immediately end the far-right Israeli government’s genocide, that is a positive and long overdue step that the Biden administration should have forced Netanyahu to implement many months and many slaughtered Palestinian civilians ago.
“Since last year, the American people and voices around the world begged President Biden to use American leverage to force the Israeli government to end the genocide, allow the free flow of humanitarian aid, secure the freedom of all hostages and political prisoners, and end the blockade and occupation that has led to repeated cycles of violence.
“Instead of listening to those voices for peace, the Biden administration stubbornly funded Israel’s war crimes, smeared critics as varied as college students, the International Criminal Court, and human rights groups, and repeatedly denied or justified the genocidal violence the Israeli government unleashed against the people of Gaza.
“President Biden should have listened to us long ago, but better late than never. His actions must now speak louder than his words. President Biden need not beg Israeli leaders not to torpedo a proposal to stop the carnage in Gaza. He can and should force their hand by ending the supply of weapons the Israeli government has used to commit war crimes.
“The genocide and U.S. support for it must end. U.S. military aid for Israel’s occupation must end. Israeli leaders must be held accountable at the International Criminal Court for the crimes they have committed. Gaza must be rebuilt and the Palestinian people must be able to live in peace and justice in a free and independent state.”
Earlier today, CAIR condemned the Israeli murder of members of Palestinian family seeking to offer free meals to forcibly-displaced people in Gaza.
Also today, CAIR demanded answers from the Agency for International Development (USAID) after a contractor with that agency resigned, saying USAID gave him a choice between resigning or dismissal over a presentation he wanted to give on maternal and child mortality among Palestinians.

Yesterday, CAIR condemned the far-right Israeli government’s destruction of a vegetable market in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
CAIR recently condemned the slaughter of some 45 Palestinian refugees – mostly women and children – sheltering in tents in the southern city of Rafah, Gaza, and yet another Israel-US massacre of Palestinian civilians in the so-called “safe zone” in Gaza.
Earlier this week, CAIR applauded another in a “growing list” of Biden administration officials who have resigned over the president’s continuing complicity in the Gaza genocide.
Washington, D.C., based CAIR also condemned former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley for a publicity stunt in which she inscribed a violent message on an Israeli artillery shell the day after Israel murdered 45 refugees.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
