(WASHINGTON D.C., 5/6/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on Iowa’s Waukee School District to offer an anti-racist curriculum to students following a racist incident that occurred at a local school.
Students at Timberline School reportedly included racist comments targeting immigrants from Mexico in a school presentation. The slideshow reportedly included comments like ‘there is a huge influx of Mexican rapists’ and ‘in the end, Mexicans are bad.’ After images of the slideshow began circulating on social media, the school principal issued a statement reaffirming the school’s zero-tolerance policy for hate speech. The Waukee School District has reportedly launched an investigation.

“Hateful, racist rhetoric like that reportedly used in the presentation has no place in an educational environment,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “This incident presents an opportunity for learning about the dangers of racism and bigotry. We urge the school district to immediately implement an anti-racism curriculum.”
He said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, antisemitism, white supremacy and all other forms of bigotry.
