The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said a report by the UN Special Rapporteur on Palestine stating there are “reasonable grounds” to assert that the far-right Israeli government is engaged in a genocide in Gaza should spur international action for a permanent ceasefire and justice for the Palestinian people.
The report stated in part:
“By analyzing the patterns of violence and Israel’s policies in its onslaught on Gaza, this report concludes that there are reasonable grounds to believe that the threshold indicating Israel’s commission of genocide is met. One of the key findings is that Israel’s executive and military leadership and soldiers have intentionally distorted jus in bello principles, subverting their protective functions, in an attempt to legitimize genocidal violence against the Palestinian people.”

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:
“The latest report by the UN’s Special Rapporteur validates what has been obvious to anyone who has witnessed what Israel has been doing in Gaza for the past five months: that the Israeli government is clearly committing a genocide against the Palestinian people. The Biden administration can no longer aid and abet the far-right Israeli government as it carries out its genocide, ethnic cleansing and forced-starvation. Our government – and the international community – can and must put an end to this savagery.”
