CAIR Says Virginia Leaders Must Confront Racism After White Supremacist Group Targets Arthur Ashe Mural

(WASHINGTON D.C., 10/19/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today said Virginia leaders must address growing racism after another racist incident in that state, this time white supremacist vandalism of the Arthur Ashe mural in Richmond, Va.

The mural in Battery Park was vandalized with tags related to the white supremacist group “Patriot Front.”

“The growing number of racist incidents in Virginia demonstrates a clear need for state and local leaders to speak out more strongly against systemic racism and white supremacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

He noted that yesterday, CAIR condemned the distribution of racist Ku Klux Klan (KKK) propaganda in Virginia’s Henrico County Fairfield and Varina districts.

Hooper added that CAIR recently supported a Virginia county board censuring of a member who sent racist texts about a fellow supervisor and called for action to protect a family from racist harassment in Virginia.

He said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and other forms of bigotry.
