CAIR-SFBA, Bay Area Muslim and Interfaith Leaders to Hold Community Vigils for Victims of Islamic Center of San Diego Shooting

Vigils in Fremont and Pleasanton will honor the three victims and call for unity against anti-Muslim hate and violence targeting faith communities

(SANTA CLARA, CA, 5/21/2026) — The San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA), along with Bay Area Muslim, interfaith, and community leaders, will take part in community vigils on Thursday, May 21, in Fremont and Friday, May 22, in Pleasanton to honor the three victims killed in the deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego.

The vigils will bring together Muslim community members, interfaith partners, elected officials, and local residents to mourn the lives lost, support the grieving families and community, and unite against hatred and violence targeting any faith community.

The victims have been identified as Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kaziha and Nadir Awad,

Background

On Monday, three members of the Islamic Center of San Diego community were killed in a shooting that has devastated Muslim communities across California and the nation. The attack has renewed urgent calls for public officials, civic leaders, and communities to confront anti-Muslim hate and ensure that mosques and other houses of worship remain safe places for prayer, gathering, and community life.

CAIR-SFBA is an office of CAIR, America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
