This afternoon, the Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, America’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, released the following statement following the congressional hearing:

“CAIR is proud of its 30-year history of condemning all forms of hate and bigotry, including antisemitism. We acknowledge the importance of addressing and combating these issues across the board wherever they arise.

“That’s partly why we’re deeply troubled by the one-sided, biased interrogation of school administrators who were called as witnesses to testify on their schools’ handling of incidents at today’s congressional hearing held by GOP-led House Committee on Education & the Workforce’s Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education chaired by Rep. Aaron Bean (R-FL).

“This hearing was heavily reminiscent of McCarthyist tactics using a campaign of unfair investigations and allegations targeting Muslim, Jewish, and allied students and teachers who simply exercised their first amendment right to criticize a foreign government’s war crimes and our own government’s complicity and role in Israeli leaders’ inflammatory rhetoric, discriminatory policies and genocidal actions in Gaza and the West Bank.

“For 214 days, the world has been witnessing atrocities against Palestinians unfold, funded by billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars. Our schools teach the values of equality, democracy, and human rights, and in a truly equitable society these values must be applied in all cases, not just when it’s comfortable or palatable.

“No educator or child should feel reluctant to condemn these crimes or feel compelled to quietly accept injustices and policies of apartheid in our institutions of learning.

“Today’s sub-committee hearing reflects a concerning trend of one-sidedness and bias as Republican lawmakers interrogated school administrators who were called as witnesses. This hearing displayed a twisted logic that undermines the very goal of fostering safety and inclusivity for diverse students and educators alike.

“The House Committee’s approach fails to address the nuanced challenges faced by schools in creating safe environments for all students. Our lawmaker’s discussions around all forms of discrimination must be conducted with fairness, balance, and a genuine commitment to ensuring student safety while fostering open dialogue.

“We call on the House Committee on Education & the Workforce to start truly working toward promoting an educational environment that upholds the values of tolerance, respect, and mutual understanding for all ethnic and religious communities, including Muslims, Arabs and Palestinians.

“This includes addressing systemic issues, providing appropriate resources, training and support to educators, and fostering meaningful engagement with diverse perspectives to build a more inclusive society for all.

“Additionally, the Republican committee members’ attacks on school district officials during the hearing demonstrated their failure to understand how to truly prioritize the safety and well-being of diverse students and teachers.

“This narrow-minded focus on blame rather than constructive solutions further hinders efforts to create a school environment where all students can thrive without fear of bias, retaliation, discrimination or prejudice.”

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
