(WASHINGTON D.C., 7/7/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today supported a request for a hate crime enhancement for charges brought against an Illinois man who allegedly shouted racist slurs at an Asian-American staffer of the University of Wisconsin (UW).
That Illinois man is currently facing disorderly conduct charges after reportedly shouting racial slurs at the alleged victim who said he feared for his life when the suspect approached him. UW police are requesting the charges be raised to a hate crime.

“Incidents prompted by hatred targeting the Asian-American community are increasing nationwide and must be addressed appropriately by law enforcement authorities,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We support the call for a hate crime enhancement in this case, which would send the message that anti-Asian hate will not be tolerated in our society.”
He said CAIR recently called on law enforcement authorities to investigate alleged racist harassment targeting a Mexican restaurant in Clinton, Wisc., as possible hate crimes. CAIR also condemned the distribution of antisemitic flyers in Marshfield, Wisc.
Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Asian hate, antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
