CAIR Supports NAACP Call for Removal of Confederate Monument from N.C. Courthouse

(WASHINGTON D.C., 2/22/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today supported a call by the NAACP to remove a Confederate monument from outside a courthouse in Robeson County, N.C.

At a meeting of the Robeson County Commission yesterday, the president of the local branch of the NAACP called for the removal of a Confederate monument that has stood outside the entrance to the county courthouse since 1907.

“Courthouses are supposed to be institutions of justice that serve all citizens equally, and the presence of a symbol of systemic anti-Black racism and white supremacy sends the opposite message,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We support the removal of the statue and urge local governments nationwide to remove all monuments honoring the traitorous Confederacy.”

He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate flags, statues and symbols from public spaces nationwide.
