CAIR Supports Removal of Confederate Monument in Nashville, Tenn.

(WASHINGTON D.C., 3/24/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed support for the removal of a Confederate monument in Nashville, Tenn.

Nashville’s Board of Parks and Recreation published a notice of their intent to petition the state of Tennessee to approve the removal of the Private Confederate Soldier monument from a local park. Under Tennessee’s Heritage Protection Act, the board would need a two-thirds vote from the state’s Historical Commission to remove the monument.

“We support all efforts to remove monuments or symbols that honor the evil cause of the Confederacy, which stood for systemic anti-Black racism, slavery and white supremacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
