(WASHINGTON D.C., 11/5/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed support for renaming a school in Hunstville, Alabama currently named after Confederate general Robert E. Lee.
The Huntsville Board of Education approved a resolution to ask Alabama’s attorney general if they would face repercussions for renaming a high school currently named for Confederate general Robert E. Lee. The school board is concerned that renaming the school would make them finable under Alabama’s Memorial Preservation Act, a law intended to protect Confederate monuments. The school would need to obtain a waiver to change the school’s name.

“Robert E. Lee was a white supremacist traitor who fought to preserve slavery,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We urge the Huntsville Board of Education to pursue removing Robert E. Lee’s name from one of its schools and support all efforts to end the honoring of the Confederacy’s legacy of racism and hate.”
Allison said the American Muslim community and CAIR are standing in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, and white supremacy.
