The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed its support for a Burlington, Vermont, ballot measure opposing Israeli apartheid and occupation of Palestinian land.
A ballot measure calling for an end to “Israel’s apartheid regime, settler colonialism and military occupation” could be on Burlington’s town meeting ballot next year. The ballot measure is identical to one that was proposed in January when councilors voted to not place it on the 2024 ballot.

CAIR expressed support for the previous measure.
“We support all resolutions condemning the far-right Israeli government’s system of apartheid and its ongoing – and U.S. enabled – genocide in Gaza,” said CAIR Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We urge elected officials and community leaders in Burlington to stand up for what is right and support this important measure.”
He noted that CAIR has similarly supported anti-genocide resolutions in towns and cities nationwide.
In 2023, CAIR called on state and federal law enforcement authorities in Burlington to investigate a possible bias motive for a shooting targeting three Palestinian university students.
