(BALTIMORE, MD, 9/30/2021) – The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), America’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today thanked the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) for steps it is taking to make its campus more inclusive for Muslim students, including providing accessible and adequate prayer space, designating modest storage space for prayer rugs, and coordinating cultural competency training for its staff at the Center for Well-Being.
“UMBC has a rich, decades-long tradition of celebrating diversity, and the conversations CAIR has had with campus administrators in recent days have underscored this,” said CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry. “We thank the administrative staff, and especially Dr. Nancy Young, for working diligently with the Muslim Students’ Association to find workable solutions for Muslim students on campus. Knowing that they’re part of an institution committed to their well-being will help them succeed both personally and in their educational careers.”
“The UMBC MSA would like to thank Dr. Nancy Young and Dr. Jasmine Lee for listening to the concerns of Muslim students on campus,” said UMBC MSA President Hassan Ansari. “We appreciate the opportunity to express ourselves and the challenges we’ve been facing. Moving forward, we hope to have a wonderful relationship with the administration where our students can be in an environment that allows them all to feel valued and celebrated.”
Earlier this month, CAIR contacted university officials seeking reasonable religious accommodations after receiving numerous complaints.
