CAIR to Join Md. Muslim Prisoner Project at Prayer, News Conference to Support Incarcerated Muslims’ Rights to Religious Accommodations in Prince George’s County

(BALTIMORE, MD, 11/29/2022) – On Friday, Dec. 2, the Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, will join community partners for a Jumah (JOO-MAH) prayer and news conference outside the Prince George’s Corrections Department to support Muslim incarcerees’ rights in to constitutionally-guaranteed religious accommodations.

[NOTE: Jumah prayer is the Islamic congregational prayer held each Friday at or about noon. It is integral to Islamic religious practices. Bring your own prayer mats.]

WHERE: In Front of Prince George’s Corrections Department, 13400 Dille Drive, Upper Marlboro, MD 20772 (Prayer will be conducted across from the visitor’s parking lot.)

WHEN: Friday, December 2, 12:15 p.m.

CONTACT: Maryland Muslim Prisoner Project Co-Chair Imam Talib Abdus Samad, 240-354-1855; CAIR Office in Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry, zchaudry@cair.com, 410-971-6062

At the news conference, participants will seek religious accommodations for incarcerated Muslims at the Prince George’s County correctional facility including the right to halal meals and to pray Jumah in congregation.

CAIR recently called on the U.S. Navy and Department of Defense to cease the unconstitutional, illegal, and shameful treatment of a Muslim incarceree who is being denied religious accommodations.

Earlier this month, CAIR called on a federal court to impose a $10,000 fine on a Nevada prison planning to violate a court order directing officials to allow Muslim incarcerees to congregate for jumah.

Washington, D.C., based CAIR offers an educational toolkit, called “A Correctional Institution’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices,” to help correctional officers and administrators gain a better understanding of Islam and Muslims.
