CAIR to Release Report on University Anti-Genocide Protests

On Tuesday, May 14 at 11 a.m. ET the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), plans to release a new report entitled “’Hostile:’ How Universities Target Anti-Genocide Protesters While Enabling Anti-Palestinian Racism and Islamophobia.”

The report documents the ways university administrators have created a hostile environment for Palestinian, Muslim, Arab, Jewish and other students, staff, and faculty opposing genocide in Gaza by using violence and disciplinary action to suppress speech that supports Palestinian rights. Its recommendations for change include examples in which protestors and university administrators were able to come to mutual agreement.

[Given the pace of new developments, we expect to be updating the document on an ongoing basis prior to release. The report’s author is available prior to release to discuss some of the types of information and recomendations that will be in the report. CAIR may make a draft version of the report available to journalists on request. Journalists can contact Corey Saylor at csaylor@cair.com.]

“Our goal with this report is to support students and staff who are engaged in efforts to end the genocide in Gaza by documenting trends since the protests started and highlighting examples of mutually agreeable outcomes,” said CAIR Research and Advocacy Director Corey Saylor. “Sadly, many university administrators are inclined to deploy tear gas, arrests, and other harsh discipline rather than acknowledge that financial transparency and ending genocide are good ideas.”
