The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today urged federal law enforcement authorities to investigate an attack on a Mexican band in Oregon as a possible hate crime.
The Deschutes County District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case in which rocks were reportedly over a fence toward a mariachi band from Mexico. The attack is being investigated as a possible bias crime. Members of the band did not initially believe the attack was bias-motivated, but when they confronted the alleged attacker “he started saying a bunch of racial stuff.”
“Based on the alleged racist comments made by the suspect in this case, and on the reported act of violence targeting members of a minority community, federal law enforcement authorities should investigate this case as a possible hate crime,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He noted that last week, CAIR condemned neo-Nazi vandalism at two Northern Virginia schools and CAIR’s Michigan chapter condemned racist and neo-Nazi messages on digital billboards in metro Detroit celebrating Adolf Hitler’s birthday.
Hooper added that CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
