CAIR Urges Removal of Confederate Flags Flown at Charleston, S.C., Harbor

(WASHINGTON D.C., 7/8/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization today called for the removal of Confederate flags flown at Castle Pinckney in South Carolina’s Charleston Harbor.

Various Confederate regimental, divisional and government flags fly from atop Castle Pinckney. The fort was the first Union military installation to be seized by Confederate forces during the Civil War.

“It is unconscionable that flags of the treasonous Confederacy should fly at the historical site of its first attack against our nation,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison.

He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.

Allison added that CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and white supremacy.

CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
