(WASHINGTON D.C., 6/29/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the removal of an image depicting a Confederate soldier from the seal of the city of Fairfax, Va.
The Fairfax City Council voted unanimously last night to change the city’s seal, which depicted a Confederate soldier and a British lord with no direct connection to the city. The idea of changing the seal originated from the “Connecting Fairfax City For All” initiative, which the city council started in January 2021.
“We welcome the Fairfax City Council’s vote to change the city seal,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “Symbols of the treasonous, white supremacist Confederacy do not belong on government emblems.”
He noted that yesterday, CAIR expressed its support for the renaming of a district in Fairfax County currently named for Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The vote on the renaming has been deferred to July 12.
