(WASHINGTON D.C., 6/28/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed its support for the renaming of a district in Virginia’s Fairfax County currently named for Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
On Sunday, Lee District’s supervisor announced that he will bring the proposal to change the district’s name to ‘Franconia’ to the county board for a vote today. The announcement came following three town hall meetings in which community members shared their perspectives on the name.

“Robert E. Lee committed treason against our nation and fought to uphold white supremacy and slavery,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We welcome the decision to change the name of Lee District and urge communities nationwide to similarly rid themselves of symbols of racism and hatred.”
He added that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
