(WASHINGTON D.C., 6/24/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today decried a delay in the removal of a Confederate flag from a Tennessee county’s official seal.
Williamson County’s effort to remove the flag from the County seal is now on hold pending legal appeals.

Earlier this year, CAIR welcomed a decision by the Tennessee Historical Commission (THC) allowing the removal. The commission ruled in favor of a petition filed by Williamson County that sought to determine whether changing the seal is subject to the Tennessee Historical Preservation Act, passed in 2013 to protect Confederate monuments. It said the county is free to act as desired to remove the seal. CAIR supported the county’s effort to remove the flag from the seal.
“There should be no delay in the removal of a symbol honoring the traitors to our nation who sought to defend slavery and systemic anti-Black racism,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
He added that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
Hooper noted that earlier this week, CAIR welcomed a decision to remove Confederate memorabilia from a jury room in Tennessee.
