CAIR Supports Effort to Remove Confederate Flag from Tennessee County Seal

(WASHINGTON D.C., 4/20/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed support for efforts to remove a Confederate flag from a Tennessee county’s official seal.

The Tennessee Historical Commission (THC) will meet this week to consider a petition filed by Williamson County that seeks to determine whether changing the seal is subject to the Tennessee Historical Preservation Act, passed in 2013 to protect Confederate monuments. If it is not deemed subject to the act, the county does not need the THC’s approval to change the seal.

“The Confederate flag is a symbol of white supremacy, slavery and treason,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We support all efforts to end the glorification of the treasonous Confederacy.”

He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
