CAIR Renews Condemnation of Mississippi Governor’s ‘Confederate Heritage Month’ Declaration

(WASHINGTON, DC., 4/12/22) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today again decried Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves decision to sign a proclamation naming April as Confederate Heritage Month.

Gov. Reeves made that proclamation for the third year in a row. CAIR similarly condemned the declaration in past years. This year, the governor also proclaimed April as “Genocide Awareness Month.”

In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:

“It is a national embarrassment that a top elected official would honor the traitors and white supremacists of the Confederacy, while disingenuously promoting ‘genocide awareness.’ Governor Reeves obviously needs a large dose of that awareness.”

He noted that Washington, D.C., CAIR has repeatedly urged the removal of remnants of the racist and traitorous Confederacy nationwide.

Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and white supremacy.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
