(WASHINGTON D.C., 4/11/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on the Board of Supervisors of Virginia’s Washington County not to re-erect two Confederate monuments in a park.
A Confederate monument previously located outside a courthouse in Washington County was removed over the weekend. The monument was taken to the parking lot of the county’s government center, from which it is expected to be moved to park behind the center. Another monument, dedicated to Confederate generals from the county, is set to be moved to the park as well.

“Confederate monuments are symbols of white supremacy and systemic anti-black racism, and do not belong in public spaces,” said CAIR National Communications Coordinator Ismail Allison. “We urge Washington County supervisors to remove these monuments from public view completely instead of merely moving them from one place to another.”
He noted that last year, CAIR welcomed a vote by the Washington County Board of Supervisors to remove the monuments from outside a local courthouse.
