CAIR Welcomes Signing of Contract to Remove La. Confederate Monument, Condemns Racist Incidents in Ark., Miss.

(WASHINGTON D.C., 4/1/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the signing of a contract allowing the removal of a Confederate monument in Caddo Parish, La. CAIR also condemned racist incidents in Arkansas and Mississippi.

Yesterday, the office of Caddo Parish announced that the parish administration signed a contract allowing for the removal of a Confederate monument currently located outside the parish courthouse. The contract calls for the statue, which has stood outside the courthouse since the early 1900’s, to be removed no later than December 31, 2022.

A couple in Trumann, Ark, have allegedly been the target of racist harassment and threats from their neighbors. The harassment reportedly began in October, when the couple’s neighbors started a bonfire close to their yard, causing the wife to worry that the fire would spread to their property. The neighbors also reportedly walked around their backyard with guns and talked about harming the couple.

After the husband put a camera in the couple’s backyard to record the harassment, the neighbors put up a large sign featuring the Confederate flag and the words “Watch this” written above it. One of the neighbors has been charged with terroristic threatening, to which he has pleaded not guilty. He will appear in court on Monday.

A county supervisor in Mississippi’s Copiah County has been called to resign after allegedly sending racist text messages to a Hazlehurst City Alderman. The alderman said he believes he was sent the messages, which included the n-word, because he refused to back the firing of a police officer who arrested the supervisor. The supervisor was also reportedly upset about the handling of a robbery at a restaurant he owns. The supervisor apologized for the texts and claimed to be inebriated when he sent them.
