(WASHINGTON D.C., 3/31/2022) – The Kentucky chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Kentucky), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today supported a call for the removal of a Confederate monument in Murray, Kentucky.
The Murray State chapter of the College Democrats held a protest earlier this month calling for the removal of a statue of Confederate military commander Robert E. Lee. The chapter held similar protests in previous years. In order for the statue to be removed, city officials would have to vote for its relocation. At the last vote, officials voted to keep the monument at its current location.
“Robert E. Lee betrayed our nation in order to uphold systemic anti-Black racism, slavery and white supremacy,” said CAIR-Kentucky Board Chair Salah Shakir. “We support the efforts to remove this monument from public view, and we support all efforts in our state and nationwide to remove symbols of hate and bigotry from public spaces.”
He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
