CAIR Supports NAACP Lawsuit to Remove North Carolina Confederate Monument

(WASHINGTON D.C., 3/28/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today expressed support for a lawsuit filed by the NAACP to remove a Confederate monument in Gaston, N.C.

The lawsuit, a hearing on which is being held today, claims the statue threatens public safety, violates the North Carolina constitution, and harms county taxpayers. In 2020, Gaston County leaders voted to remove the statue and gift it to the Sons of Confederate Veterans, but after those plans fell through, commissioners voted to keep the monument.

“The Confederacy stood for systemic anti-Black racism, slavery and white supremacy, and any monument honoring that racist legacy honors those shameful aspects of our nation’s history,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We support the NAACP’s efforts to remove this monument, just as we support all other efforts to remove symbols of hate from public display nationwide.”

Hooper added that a similar controversy is continuing in North Carolina’s Randolph County. He said CAIR similarly supports efforts to remove a Confederate monument in that county.
