(WASHINGTON D.C., 3/29/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today supported a Virginia judge’s call to remove a Confederate monument in that state. CAIR also called for the removal of a Confederate monument in Tennessee.
A judge from Virginia’s 16th circuit has called on leaders in Orange County to remove a Confederate monument located on the lawn of the county courthouse. In his email to county leaders, the judge called the monument an “obstruction of justice.”

In Tennessee, a group led by the Collierville town administration offered several solutions to controversy surrounding a Confederate monument in the town. The monument is located in Collierville’s Town Square Park and bears the inscription “Confederate Park.” The solutions proposed by the group included covering up the part of the monument that reads “Confederate Park,” removing all monuments in the town center and embedding markers into the sidewalk and adding a monument to Black Union soldiers.

“Confederate monuments were designed to be symbols of white supremacy and hate that were installed to intimidate Black Americans and keep them from exercising their civil rights,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “They do not belong anywhere on public land or places of honor.”
He noted that yesterday, CAIR expressed support for a lawsuit filed by the NAACP to remove a Confederate monument in Gaston, N.C.
