(WASHINGTON D.C., 3/30/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the announced review of more than 750 “Department of Defense items,” include military bases, streets signs and bridges, to determine whether their names “commemorate the Confederacy.”
That announcement came from the Congressional Naming Commission set up to remove Confederate names from military bases. The commission’s final recommendations are due on October 1.
“Our nation’s military, which suffered tremendous losses at the hands of Confederate traitors, should never honor those who sought to defend slavery, systemic anti-Black racism and white supremacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “We welcome this sweeping review – and hopefully swift removal – of military items related to the Confederacy.”
He noted that just yesterday, CAIR supported a Virginia judge’s call to remove a Confederate monument in that state. CAIR also called for the removal of a Confederate monument in Tennessee.
CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
