(WASHINGTON D.C., 4/6/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a ruling by the North Carolina Court of Appeals allowing the City of Asheville to remove a Confederate monument.
CAIR last year welcomed an Asheville city council vote to remove the Vance Monument from its spot in the city’s main public space. The monument is named after Zebulon Vance, a Confederate officer and North Carolina’s governor during the Civil War. Last June, the court issued an order stopping the removal until the outcome of an appeal.

The ruling means the city can proceed with the removal of the base of the monument, which is all that remains, if no new appeals are not filed with the N.C. Supreme Court.
In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:
“We welcome this ruling and urge the swift removal of what is left of this monument honoring an advocate of treason, slavery and white supremacy. Those who fought against our nation in defense of racism should never be honored in public spaces.”
He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
Hooper said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, white supremacy, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and all other forms of bigotry.”
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
