(WASHINGTON D.C., 4/22/2022) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a decision by the Tennessee Historical Commission (THC) that will allow the removal of a Confederate flag from a Tennessee county’s official seal.
The commission this morning ruled in favor of a petition filed by Williamson County that sought to determine whether changing the seal is subject to the Tennessee Historical Preservation Act, passed in 2013 to protect Confederate monuments. It said the county is free to act as desired to remove the seal.
Earlier this week, CAIR supported the county’s effort to remove the Confederate flag from the seal.
“We welcome this decision as just one small part of the nationwide effort to remove all symbols of the racist and traitorous Confederacy,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “No government emblem should honor those who sought to destroy our nation in defense of systemic anti-Black racism.”
He noted that CAIR has repeatedly called for the removal of Confederate holidays, flags, statues, and symbols nationwide.
