CAIR Welcomes Anne Arundel County’s Launch of Hate Crime Prevention Program

The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the launch of Anne Arundel County’s Hate Crime Prevention Program, an initiative aimed at combating hate crimes and fostering a safer and more inclusive community.

The program, announced by Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman, is designed to prevent hate crimes through education, awareness, and community engagement. The initiative will provide resources and support for victims, as well as training for law enforcement and community members to recognize and respond to hate crimes effectively.

CAIR commends Anne Arundel County for taking proactive steps to address the alarming rise in hate crimes across the nation. The organization believes this program will play a crucial role in protecting vulnerable communities, including Muslims, who have often been targets of hate-based violence and discrimination.

“We applaud Anne Arundel County for launching this essential Hate Crime Prevention Program,” said Kimberly Syuardi, CAIR Maryland’s Outreach Coordinator. “In a time when hate crimes are on the rise, it is vital for local governments to take a stand and implement measures that not only prevent these acts but also support victims and promote understanding among all communities. We look forward to the success of this program in Anne Arundel County to create a safer place for everyone.”

CAIR has long advocated for stronger measures to combat hate crimes, including better reporting mechanisms, increased law enforcement training, and community outreach programs. Recently in August, CAIR published their civil rights data on issues impacting Muslim and Arab communities in Maryland.

The data highlights a troubling trend in reports of discrimination, free speech violations, hate bias incidents and bullying, among other concerns. CAIR documented 413 cases of anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian complaints, incidents and requests for assistance statewide between January – June 2024. CAIR is committed to working with local and state governments to ensure that hate crimes are addressed swiftly and effectively.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance the understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
