(WASHINGTON, D.C., 12/18/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the arrest of a man who allegedly assaulted two people outside a synagogue in Washington, D.C.
A man was arrested on Sunday after allegedly spraying two individuals leaving a synagogue with a foul-smelling substance. The man was reportedly shouting antisemitic slurs. The victims were not physically hurt. Police are investigating the case as a hate crime.

“We welcome the arrest of the suspected perpetrator of the antisemitic assault and thank law enforcement authorities for their swift response to this troubling incident,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “No one should be subjected to violence on the basis of their faith or ethnicity.”
Hooper also expressed solidarity of American Muslims with the Jewish community during the ongoing international crisis.
He said Washington, D.C., based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
