(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/10/23) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the arrest of an alleged white supremacist accused of threatening jurors and witnesses in the Pittsburgh Tree of Life mass shooting trial.
Hardy Carroll Lloyd, 45, is facing federal charges alleging obstruction and witness tampering in the trial of shooter Robert Bowers. Federal prosecutors say Lloyd, who called himself the “reverend” of a white supremacy movement, allegedly commented online about the Bowers trial, making threatening comments toward the jury and witnesses.

In June, CAIR and its Pittsburgh chapter welcomed the conviction of Bowers, who attacked the Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018, killing 11 congregants in an act of antisemitic terror.
In a statement, CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper said:
“We welcome this arrest as a sign that those bringing justice to violent bigots will not be influenced or intimated by the twisted individuals who support that violence. Jurors and witnesses must be protected from anyone who seeks to prevent accountability for the violence perpetrated by extremists.”
He noted that at the time of the Pittsburgh attack, CAIR-Pittsburgh President Safdar Khwaja said in part: “This barbaric attack at a house of worship on our neighbors, with whom we share our city and have visited and dialogued multiple times, is deeply disturbing and horrifying. Such an act of terror effects all of us…”
Hooper said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
