(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/9/2023) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed efforts to remove a Confederate monument from Arlington National Cemetery.
The cemetery is now seeking public input on its plan to remove a Confederate monument, which includes sanitized and nostalgic depictions of slavery, from its grounds. The proposal is part of a broader push by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to remove all references, displays and paraphernalia that commemorate the Confederacy from each of the Defense Department’s assets.

“Monuments that present slavery in a nostalgic light and glorify the traitorous Confederacy do not belong in our national cemetery or anywhere nationwide,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.
Hooper said that in 2022, CAIR welcomed a plan to rename military installations named for Confederate historical figures and remove or modify a host of monuments and tributes to the Confederacy.
He noted that CAIR previously expressed support for efforts to remove the monument and other symbols of the Confederacy nationwide.
