The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a decision by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to recognize a Palestinian state at next month’s United Nations General Assembly but said that Western nations now recognizing Palestine must go further by imposing an arms embargo on Israel over its ongoing genocide in Gaza.
In a statement, CAIR said:
“We welcome Australia’s decision to recognize Palestinian statehood and urge the international community to follow suit, but it is imperative that nations go beyond symbolic gestures and take meaningful action—starting with a total halt to all weapons transfers and military support to Israel. It makes no sense for Australia and other Western governments recognizing Palestine to arm the Israeli military while it commits genocidal war crimes meant to make a Palestinian state impossible.”
Last month, CAIR welcomed the Canadian government’s announcement that it plans to recognize the State of Palestine and called President Trump’s implicit threat to scuttle a trade agreement with Canada over its decision the “latest sign” that his administration is putting Israel first, not America first.
Also last month, CAIR welcomed the French government’s planned recognition of a Palestinian state.
