The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed the French government’s planned recognition of a Palestinian state and urged other nations across the world to take similar action as one way to respond to Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday that France would recognize a Palestinian state. Macron said in a post on X that he will formalize the decision at the U.N. General Assembly in September.

“We welcome France’s planned recognition of a Palestinian state and urge other nations across Europe and the world to do the same in response to Israel’s genocide in Gaza,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Recognizing Palestine sends a message to the far-right Israeli government of indicted war criminal Benjamin Netanyahu that its immoral, illegal and genocidal actions will not be accepted by the people of the world.”
Hooper added that CAIR has in the past raised concerns about France’s treatment of its Muslim population.
