CAIR Welcomes Charges for ‘KKK’ Vandalism of Black Church in Delaware, Sentencing for Racist Harassment

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed charges for the racist vandalism of a Black church in Dover, Delaware. CAIR also welcomed the sentencing of a woman for racist harassment in Newark, Delaware. 

A Dover man faces six counts of graffiti and six counts of possession of graffiti instruments after a series of vandalism incidents, including defacing a predominantly Black house of worship with KKK messaging. Police are investigating whether the vandalism of the church constitutes a hate crime.

A woman who reportedly harassed her neighbors with racial epithets despite a court order to cease contact with them received a 1-year prison sentence, suspended for Intensive Probation Supervision.

“The targeting of individuals and communities on the basis of their race cannot be tolerated by our society,” said CAIR National Communications Manager Ismail Allison. “We welcome the action taken by law enforcement authorities in Delaware in connection with these incidents and stand in solidarity with those targeted by racial harassment.”

Washington, D.C., based CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
