CAIR Welcomes College Democrats of America’s (CDA) Commitment to Address Anti-Muslim Bigotry Within Organization

(WASHINGTON D.C., 11/22/2021) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a resolution by the College Democrats of America (CDA) committing to address anti-Muslim bigotry within the organization and to protect Muslims from facing abuse for practicing their faith or advocating for Palestinian human rights.

The resolution, dated today, was passed by the National Council of the College Democrats of America, said the CDA will work to meet the demands listed by CAIR in a letter the civil rights organization sent to the CDA on Nov. 10. CAIR called on the CDA to:

1)    Require all elected officers at the national and state level to undergo training on Islam and Islamophobia hosted by an organization approved by the Muslim Caucus of the CDA.

2)    Formally investigate harassment and other mistreatment of Muslim members of the CDA, including Vice President Nourhan Mesbah, and take appropriate action to discipline or expel members who engaged in such harassment.

3)    Adopt and publish a resolution affirming the CDA’s commitment to welcome American Muslims and respect their perspectives, including support for Palestinian human rights.

The College Democrats of American Muslim Caucus also welcomed the CDA resolution as a “first step” in condemning Islamophobia and “expressing support for our freedom to advocate for Palestine.”

In a statement, CAIR Deputy Executive Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:

“We welcome the College Democrats of America’s commitment to address anti-Muslim bigotry within the organization by taking the steps we requested.

“It is essential that organizations like the CDA ensure that Muslim students no longer face harassment, bullying or exclusion because they visibly practice their faith or express their political views, including support for Palestinian human rights.

“Anti-Muslim bigotry, racism and other forms of bigotry have no place in any organization, especially not in one that claims to be committed to diversity and inclusion.”

In recent months, CAIR received numerous complaints from Muslim and non-Muslim CDA members who have experienced or witnessed anti-Muslim bigotry within the organization. The complaints include allegations that Muslim CDA members who pursue leadership positions, visibly practice their faith or speak up for Palestinian human rights have been targeted, harassed and silenced. Members of the CDA have even referred to the current vice president of the organization, Nourhan Mesbah, as a “jihadist” online.

CAIR sent a letter to the CDA on November 10th calling on the organization to take immediate action to address anti-Muslim bigotry.
