(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/31/21) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed an FBI hate crime investigation of an apparently bias-motivated arson attack on a family’s home in Indiana.
FBI investigators are looking into the fire and vandalism in Connersville, Ind., as arson and a hate crime because a racial slur – the N-word – was reportedly spray-painted on the back patio of the home that was set on fire Friday morning. The family was not home at the time, but family pets died in the fire.

“We welcome the FBI’s involvement in the case and urge local and state authorities to treat this apparently bias-motivated arson attack with the seriousness that it deserves,” said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper. “Without strong push back from the majority of Americans and our nation’s leaders, the growing minority of racists and bigots will inevitably feel emboldened.”
Earlier this month, CAIR’s Chicago office urged police in Bloomington, Ind., to investigate substantial vandalism to the Islamic Center of Bloomington.

Hooper said the American Muslim community and CAIR stand in solidarity with all those challenging anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
