Muslim civil rights group also welcomes actions by government officials in U.S. and Europe against Israeli genocide
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a declaration by a federal court in California that Israel’s on Gaza “plausibly” amounts to genocide, despite dismissing a case calling for an end to military support for Israel as being outside the court’s jurisdiction.
Judge Jeffrey White of the US district court in the northern district of California wrote, “…as the ICJ [the international court of justice] has found, it is plausible that Israel’s conduct amounts to genocide.” The case was brought by human rights groups and individual Palestinians against President Joe Biden, Antony Blinken, the secretary of state, and Lloyd Austin, the defense secretary.
CAIR also welcomed recent action by government officials in the United States and Europe against the far-right Israeli government’s genocidal campaign in Gaza.
On Thursday, a group of federal employees who oppose President Joe Biden’s blind support for Israel’s ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza held a “day of fasting” to draw attention to the growing humanitarian crisis faced by the Palestinian people.
More than 800 officials in the US and Europe signed a statement warning that their governments’ policies enabling the genocide in Gaza could amount to “grave violations of international law.”
In a statement, CAIR National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said:
“We welcome Judge White’s statement on the far-right Israeli government’s campaign of genocide in Gaza. His statement echoes what was said by the International Court of Justice, by hundreds of serving officials in our nation and in Europe, and by the millions of people in American and worldwide who demand an end to Israel’s genocide and ethnic cleansing.
“World leaders are now increasingly on notice that they will be held accountable for supporting and enabling Israel’s genocidal actions.”
Yesterday, CAIR condemned a newly-revealed policy of the far-right Israeli government to carry out its ethnic cleansing of Gaza by burning unoccupied Palestinian homes from which residents have been forced to flee.
Previously, CAIR said the International Court of Justice (ICJ) should add a reported massacre of Palestinians in Gaza to South Africa’s charge of genocide against the far-right Israeli government.
He noted that CAIR recently called on President Biden to personally condemn an Israeli massacre of Palestinian civilians in Gaza who were waiting for humanitarian aid in Gaza City.
In December, CAIR called Israel’s massacre of at least 70 people in a strike on Gaza’s Maghazi refugee camp and murdered a number of pregnant women.
Also in December, CAIR calls for a United Nations investigation of allegations that Israeli forces in Gaza carried our summary executions of unarmed Palestinian men in front of their family members.
Last week, CAIR welcomed a preliminary ruling ICJ, the UN’s principal judicial body, that declares South Africa’s charge of genocide against the Israeli government plausible.
Earlier this week, CAIR condemned the Biden administration’s “morally depraved and glaringly inconsistent” decision to engage in collective punishment against Palestinians by cutting funding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) in response to unsubstantiated and suspiciously timed allegations made by the Israeli government.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
