(BALTIMORE, MD, 2/27/2023) – The Maryland office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed a hate crime charge brought against a suspect in an allegedly antisemitic incident in Maryland.
A man was charged with knocking a grocery shopper unconscious in a Gaithersburg, Md., store last month during an incident in which antisemitic remarks were reportedly made.

In a statement, CAIR’s Maryland Director Zainab Chaudry said:
“We welcome the hate crime charge in this case and hope it sends the message that those who allegedly turn their prejudice into violent actions will be held accountable.”
Chaudry noted that CAIR condemned an anti-Semitic “Day of Hate” planned for this past Saturday by neo-Nazi groups and encouraged American Muslims to offer support to their Jewish neighbors.
She said CAIR and the American Muslim community stand in solidarity with all those challenging antisemitism, systemic anti-Black racism, xenophobia, Islamophobia, white supremacy, and all other forms of bigotry.
CAIR’s mission is to protect civil rights, enhance understanding of Islam, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
